New York Facts

New York was one of the original thirteen colonies that became the United States. Albany is the capital of the state of New York and the City of New York is the most populous city in the United States.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, New York was the third largest state in population after California and Texas as of 2005, with an estimated population of 19,254,630, which is an increase of 27,542, or 0.1%, from the prior year and an increase of 277,809, or 1.5%, since the year 2000.

New York winters are cold with the possibility of snow storms, freezing rain and cold winds. Summer can be very hot and humid with thunderstorms. Hurricane season is usually from August through September. Because of its high energy usage and the tall buildings, NYC has its own micro-climate which is hotter in the summer and warmer in winter than the surrounding suburbs.

New York City is a major center for finance, banking and international business. The convention and tourist business is one of the state's most important sources of income. Million of business men and tourists visit the state every year and John F. Kennedy International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world.
