State median home price climbs, L.A. flat in Dec. 2003
The median price of an existing home in California increased 19.4 percent in December to a record $404,520, per the California Association of Realtors.

In December 2002, the median price of a home was $338,840, according to C.A.R. In November 2003, the revised median price was $384,930. In Los Angeles County, the median price was unchanged at $382,140 compared to November 2003 and up 26.8 percent over December 2002, when the median price of an existing, single-family home hovered around $279,700.

Orange County's median home price increased 1.3 percent over November 2003 to $533,030 and climbed 22.8 percent over December 2002 when the median price was around $411,500.

In a separate report covering more localized statistics generated by C.A.R. and DataQuick Information Systems, 93.7 percent or 371 of 396 California cities and communities showed an increase in their respective median home prices from a year ago.

Statistics from La Jolla-based DataQuick are based on county records data rather than Multiple Listing Service information. DataQuick is a subsidiary of Vancouver-based MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates. Statewide, the 10 cities and communities with the highest median home prices in the state during December 2003 were:
